Exploring parental language ideology and language enrichment in Indonesian children’s translingual practices

There is an increased urgency of acquiring a lingua franca in this era industrial revolution 4.0 and society 5.0 as language mastery plays crucial role meeting the 21st-century’s demand to compete globally. To end, family literacy practices have become keys for socialize their children into languages they think will benefit children’s future. Despite increasingly abundant research on bilingual/multilingualism, English bilingual practice Indonesian contexts still limited. This paper aimed discuss enrichment used acquire two families South Sumatra. A case study design was examine translingual practice. Interviews observations were conducted collect data from families. Categorizing strategies (coding thematic analysis) accomplished analyze data. The findings highlight translanguaging, code-switching, code-mixing families’ common at home. Another finding reveals critical digital media, such TV programs, YouTube videos, online games, books, supporting acquisition. Implications include need pay attention important component understanding how second socialization occurs outside formal schooling media mediating process.
